Right after my undergraduate degree, I joined Axles India as a Mechanical Design Engineer in their Product Development and Engineering Team in June 2017. Axles India is a leading rear axle manufacturer for heavy commercial vehicles in India. My role was primarily to design and develop the axle housings as per the customer's requirement. Hence, my scope of work was pretty wide and I had got the opportunity to work in several cross-functional teams which enabled me to understand the overall operations of the company. The company was very supportive of my ideas with respect to digitizing and archiving design data by implementing SOLIDWORKS PDM and enabling me to improve their current process by value engineering. The product itself has to go through various manufacturing stages which exposed me to designing for machine shops like Hot and Cold Forging, VMCs, CNCs, Multi-Toll Drilling, Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Welding (Robotic and Manual), and Friction Welding I had the opportunity to work, interact and collaborate with several experts in manufacturing, metallurgy, and quality which has enriched the approach of my design process. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand customer needs and convert them to design functions.

  • Generate 3D models using Solidworks and NX.

  • Create detailed product drawings using AutoCAD by promptly apply GD&T as per ASME Y14.5.

  • Perform engineering analysis, tolerance stack-up analysis, design for manufacturing and assembly.

  • Ownership for new product development from prototype to production.

  • Lead cross-functional teams to ensure concurrent engineering and timely delivery of prototypes.

  • Manage and interact with suppliers for analyzing manufacturing feasibility and modifying designs for rapid prototyping based on the analysis.

  • Experience in processing RFQ, Design Review, Design Verification, preparing DFMEA, Manufacturing Feasibility Study, APQP Timing plan, and documentation as per IATF 16949.0

  • Contribute technical support during production for continuous improvement, the introduction of error-proof, product inspection, defining datums in jigs and fixtures.

Key Project Achievements

  • Implementation engineer for Solidworks Product Database Management (PDM) shortening the lead time for design release by 35% and a significant decrease in design errors by introducing drawing automation.

  • Implemented Design Optimization Techniques by Designing for Modularity and inculcating VAVE Activities by reducing material cost, machining time, and rework percentage saving around 2.2 million CAD.

  • Improved finished product quality by reducing burrs, dust, and rust formations in the parts by improving the coolant oil in machines and the effectiveness of the washing machine.
